News release: residents can become community reporters with roll out of website
A ground breaking website where Fenland folk can become community news hounds has
gone live across the district this week.
The website, www.shapeyourplace.org, a first for Cambridgeshire, lets people tell their story about their community and hold public services to account.
Now each market town in Fenland and their surrounding villages will have their own dedicated ShapeYourPlace.
This comes after a successful pilot in the Wisbech area, which has been shortlisted for a national award.
All residents can visit their local ShapeYourPlace website and report issues directly to local councils, the police, the fire service and Councillors. They in return will respond and explain how they will try and resolve issues where they can.
Local people can also join in conversations, join debates and back campaigns started by other residents.
The project has trained volunteer community reporters who can blog and video
community issues, events and give free publicity to community groups. One community reporter working on the successful Wisbech pilot has even given a retired baker a taste of fame by turning him into a YouTube star.
The website for Wisbech has also helped resolve a number of problems reported by residents including repainting a faded zebra crossing, highlighting anti social behaviour in a play area and clearing fly tipping.
Free training is on offer for anyone wanting to volunteer as a community reporter. Contact Matthew Hall on 01223 699493 or email matthew.hall@cambridgeshire.gov.uk
The project has been developed in partnership by Cambridgeshire County Council, Fenland District Council, the Police and Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue and the Rosmini Centre, a community organisation based in Wisbech.
Annie Appleby, a volunteer community reporter based in Wisbech said: “It’s great fun working as a community reporter on ShapeYourPlace – you get to meet some really inspiring people and celebrate and report on the things you care most about where you live. In most cases, where I have raised an issue, local services have responded very promptly about how they will try and resolve it. At the very least you get an explanation behind how decisions are made.”
Cambridgeshire County Councillor, Steve Tierney said: “ShapeYourPlace is a great forum for debating the issues and priorities in my division. I have been able to champion their issues and take them up with officers working in the local public sector to get them resolved. I’d encourage everyone to take a look at ShapeYourPlace – you can find out loads about your community, get your view across and celebrate where you live.”
Cambridgeshire County Councillor Steve Criswell and Cabinet Member for Customer Service and Transformation, said: “ShapeYourPlace is part of Cambridgeshire’s localism agenda where residents get a bigger say about how services are run. We want people to join in the conversations on ShapeYourPlace and share their views with their community about where they live. That way if there is a problem we can look at ways to resolve it.”
ShapeYourPlace has been shortlisted for the LG Comms Awards 2011.
